Rome 4 day travel itinerary
Rome in 4 Days: How to See the Eternal City Without the Overwhelm
Rome is a city where the density of extraordinary things to see can itself become exhausting. Most first-time visitors leave feeling they have barely scratched the surface — but with a structured approach and smart transport, four days is genuinely enough to feel you have understood the place.
Getting In and Getting Around
Rome's Fiumicino Airport is 30km from the city centre. Pre-book your Discovia airport transfer — the taxi rank is notorious for unlicensed operators and overcharging. Once in the city, Discovia's ride share handles the longer cross-city journeys; most sightseeing within the historic centre is walkable.
Day One: Ancient Rome
The Colosseum and Roman Forum require a full morning. Book timed-entry tickets 2–4 weeks in advance to avoid queues. The Capitoline Hill and its museums take the afternoon. Avoid the tourist restaurants immediately surrounding the Colosseum — walk 10 minutes west for a dramatically better meal at a fraction of the price.
Day Two: Vatican and Trastevere
The Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, and St Peter's Basilica require a full day. Book the earliest entry slot to see the Sistine Chapel before the crowds arrive. Evening in Trastevere — Rome's most atmospheric neighbourhood for dinner and the city's best gelato.
Days Three and Four: The Baroque City
The Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Piazza Navona, and the Borghese Gallery represent Rome's 17th-18th century golden age. The Borghese in particular requires advance booking and is one of the finest small museums in the world. Book a Discovia Ride & Guide for these days to get the historical context that makes everything make sense.
