Lisbon vs Porto: Which Portuguese City Should You Visit First?

This is Portugal's most debated travel question. Both cities are extraordinary — but they are extraordinary in different ways, and the traveller who understands the difference will have a better trip whichever one they choose.

The Character Difference

Lisbon is grand, panoramic, and varied. It has the weight of an imperial capital — the broad avenues, the hilltop fortresses, the sweeping waterfront. Porto is more intimate, vertical, and cohesive. It has the feeling of a place that grew organically and was never redesigned for grandeur. Both are correct; neither is superior.

The Food Verdict

Porto wins on food. The francesinha (a layered meat sandwich in a spiced tomato sauce) is the city's iconic dish and is genuinely one of Portugal's greatest culinary achievements. The tascas of the ribeira serve the most authentic northern Portuguese food. Lisbon's food scene is more diverse but Porto's is more distinctively itself.

Getting Between Them

Lisbon and Porto are 310km apart. The TAP air shuttle takes 55 minutes and is bookable through Discovia. The Alfa Pendular train takes 2h 40m and travels along a scenic coastal route. Discovia handles airport transfers at both ends seamlessly.

First-time visitors to Portugal: start in Lisbon. It is the more accessible entry point with more varied attractions for a shorter trip. Return visitors and those with a week or more: base in Porto.
