Dubrovnik travel guide tips
Featured1 / 1Dubrovnik: The Pearl of the Adriatic Explained
Dubrovnik may be the most visually perfect city in Europe. The medieval walled city — entirely intact, built on a peninsula jutting into the Adriatic — is one of those places where the photographs simply do not prepare you for the reality.
Getting There and Managing the Crowds
Dubrovnik Airport is 20km from the city. Pre-book your Discovia airport transfer — the taxi situation at Dubrovnik Airport is chaotic and overpriced. Visit in May, June, or September rather than July–August when cruise ship day-tripper volumes make the Old Town genuinely unpleasant between 10am and 5pm.
The City Walls: Walk Them Early
The 2km walk around the top of the Old Town walls is the essential Dubrovnik experience. Do it at 8am when it opens — the crowds build dramatically through the morning and the heat becomes significant by midday. The early light on the terracotta rooftops and blue Adriatic is also objectively superior.
Beyond the Old Town
Lokrum Island, accessible by a short ferry from the Old Town harbour, offers swimming, a botanical garden, and a fort with panoramic views — and far fewer people than the mainland. The Lapad Peninsula, 4km from the Old Town, has the best beaches. A Discovia ride share connects them all.
Day Trip to Montenegro or Bosnia
Dubrovnik's position makes it an ideal base for short international excursions. Kotor in Montenegro and Mostar in Bosnia are both within 2.5 hours by road. Discovia's mini bus hire or Ride & Guide service can be booked for a guided full-day excursion to either destination.
