Amsterdam weekend guide 48 hours
“Explore Amsterdam in just 48 hours with this practical weekend itinerary. Discover iconic museums, scenic canals, local neighborhoods, cycling routes, and convenient airport transfer options for a seamless city break.
Amsterdam in 48 Hours: The Perfect Weekend Blueprint
Amsterdam is one of Europe's most efficient weekend destinations — compact, walkable, and dense with things worth seeing. Done right, 48 hours leaves you feeling you've genuinely understood the city rather than just passed through it.
Arrive and Orientate
Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is 17 minutes by direct train from Amsterdam Centraal. Alternatively, book a Discovia airport transfer directly to your hotel — ideal if you are arriving late or with significant luggage. Stay in the Jordaan neighbourhood if possible; it is the most characterful part of the city and centrally placed for everything.
Morning: The Rijksmuseum and Vondelpark
Book your Rijksmuseum ticket in advance — the queue for walk-in entry can take over an hour even in shoulder season. Allocate a full morning. Afterwards, walk through Vondelpark and pick up a stroopwafel from a street vendor — the proper fresh version bears no resemblance to the packaged tourist variety.
Afternoon: The Canal Ring
Amsterdam's Golden Age canal ring is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The best way to experience it is on a Discovia bike rental — the cycle paths along Prinsengracht and Keizersgracht are both scenic and practical. Stop at the Anne Frank House (book tickets weeks in advance) and the Westerkerk.
Evening and Day Two
Evening in the Jordaan neighbourhood for dinner and drinks. Day two — the Van Gogh Museum in the morning (again, pre-book), the Albert Cuyp Market in De Pijp for lunch, and De Hallen in the West for coffee and independent shops in the afternoon. Discovia transfer back to Schiphol for your evening departure.
